"The game of Chess is not merely an idle amusement. Several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired or strengthened by it, so as to become habits, ready on all occasions."

- Benjamin Franklin

Dear Chess Enthusiast,

The 3rd Annual LNB Open is right around the corner. We look forward to your participation this year. It will be promising. Already expressing an interest to compete at this event is the young, talented, and sensational IM Axel Bachmann who has already aquired his 3 GM norms. For those of you who are familiar with ICC, Axel is none other than "Olimpus" who at times has had a 3000+ blitz rating. Make plans to be part of this event. You may mail in your entries to Mr. Edward Guetzow. For more information please follow this link: http://www.rgvtxchess.org/tmts/07lnb.htm.
Chess in South Texas

Chess in South Texas continues to grow! Countless people are responsible for the success and growth of chess in el Valle (the "Valley"); too many, that it would be impossible to name them all.

I would like to recognize our Sponsor and the three gentlemen featured below, as they continue to lead the way for the Valley's success.

The Texas Chess Association (TCA), a nonprofit corporation established under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code, continues to vigorously promote an interest in chess throughout the State of Texas. TCA is again working collaboratively with local organizers and sponsors to bring the 2006 Texas Junior Invitational, 10th Annual Texas Grades & Collegiate Championships and the 2006 Texas Girls Scholastic chess tournaments. Another major tournament, sponsored by Lardo National Bank, is the 2nd Annual LNB South Texas Open.

As owner of FioreChess.org and RGVTxChess.org, I am honored to be associated with the other administrators of these sites. Their unselfish giving of themselves to promote chess speaks volumes of their leadership and vision. Indeed, their unyielding dedication, and others like them, has paved the way for a chess explosion in South Texas that is matched by few regions. I hope to emulate that energy and excitement to help grow chess in Minnesota.

There is a group of us that is working to get the Minnesota State High School League to accept chess as one of their recognized activities. It is our hope that in doing so, more high schools will implement scholastic programs and/or dedicate more resources to existing programs. Similarly, we anticipate and believe programs at the lower levels will also sprout or be further solidified.

Finally, I am working on establishing a chess scholarship program at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and other institutions of higher learning throughout the state - much like the University of Texas at Dallas, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and the University of Texas at Brownsville. I am happy to announce that I have enlisted the help of IM John Bartholomew to assist with this effort. IM Bartholomew is from Minnesota, and is attending the University of Texas at Dallas, on a four year chess scholarship. He is the highest rated player from Minnesota, and is well on his way on being the first modern-day Grandmaster from our state.

Accordingly, I invite everyone to contribute something in building our chess communities. If we can look past the insignificant issues, and build on those things that matter, the things that unite us, we can accomplish great things.

The district-wide chess programs at both BISD and SBCISD have been an attribute to Renaissance learning in the Valley. Chess contributes to a higher level of intelligence at all campuses. I am a true believer of giving every child an opportunity to broaden their intelligence.  I am proud to have been part of the initial planning of the BISD district-wide chess program in 2002. Furthermore, I support more districts mirroring the success of the two mentioned districts and an increase in funding for the current chess programs.

My total admiration and praise goes out to all of the coaches involved with chess at their schools. They work hard before and after school, and dedicate many hours towards chess because they believe in their students. Chess coaches are paid practically nothing for the amount of hours they put in. Nearly all coaches put in over 600 hours of service per academic year for a $1000 stipend. I completely support an increase toward chess funding at district levels.

I also witnessed countless parents giving up their busy schedules in support of the chess programs at all campuses.  The passion of these parents is the secret behind their children's success in chess and the ingredient to the success of their program. I would like to thank parents for giving up their Saturdays to support their children at chess tournaments. Thank you for believing and sacrificing for our future. I believe it is that type of passion which will help make higher education a priority for all children throughout the Valley. Indeed, your support empowers children to succeed in chess and in life.

Chess has grown in the Valley and must continue to grow. We must all work collaboratively to make this happen. It is for that reason that I am happy and honored to sponsor this website. I am very excited about our next step of growth which includes the upcoming 2005 Texas Girls Championships to be held here in the Valley. It is very promising to see more young ladies getting involved with chess. I encourage all of you to support our girls and to also support new programs. Let's all work together to make Chess a big part of higher learning at every school in the Valley. Support chess!

My goal is to stimulate and promote the growth of chess in the Rio Grande Valley. I would like to see more major TCA events and chess opens held in the Valley. I am a big advocate of scholastic chess. I strongly believe every child benefits academically via chess. Children may start as early as pre-kinder to develop their cognitive thinking skills. Chess builds self-esteem, teaches discipline, fosters positive social skills, and more importantly, empowers children to succeed.

I believe our scholastic chess program in the Rio Grande Valley will benefit greatly if we can bring quality chess tournaments here, like the chess opens and the TCA state tournaments. We need to afford children the opportunity to play against the most talented chess players of all ages the state of Texas has to offer. My advice to all coaches is to teach good sportsmanship. Children should place friendship and good sportsmanship as a priority over winning.

My advice to chess parents is to never make a child cry over a game of chess. Parents who get upset at their child when they lose a game may unintentionally be discouraging their child from playing chess again. It is very sad to see a parent get angry with their child for losing a game and say something thing like, "If you would listen to me you wouldn't lose." Please don't expect your child to do the impossible and win every game. Not even children who are masters can win every game they play. Therefore, please be there for your child whether they win, lose, or draw, and  give them a hug and say I love you. Also, give them words of encouragement for the next time they play.

TCA Region VIII Director

I have been coaching chess for 3 1/2 years at the elementary school level. I began teaching and coaching chess as a means to give something positive back to my community. It has been the most rewarding experience I could have ever imagined. If our children are our future then let's try and give our future the best skills possible for everyone's sake. Chess is the great equalizer.

I deeply believe that introducing chess to children at an early age greatly increases their ability to succeed in life. Chess gives everyone of all ages the opportunity to succeed in some  form no matter their ability nor their age. It teaches responsibility for one's actions, encourages better thinking skills, sharpens one's problem solving ability, reinforces self-esteem and, overall, teaches us that no  one is perfect.

My personal goal is to have our entire school district and region playing  chess at some level or other.  I want to see it in the malls, in  restaurants, in the parks and any place that two people might chance to meet for a game.  I want to be able to sit down when I am old and gray and find myself a nice game of chess wherevere I go.

For the past 11 years, I have primarily taught 2 nd grade. Starting this year, my career path has taken me to teaching technology to our Kinder through 5 th graders. As part of a school that has been rated Exemplary by the Texas Education Agency for each and every year of our existence, I understand the focus of providing quality education to all our students – a challenging experience!

I have been involved with our chess program for almost eight years. From experience, I can tell you that excellence in chess does not always come from the best and the brightest. Oftentimes, it is the kids who have learning struggles that seem to pick up on this game and excel with it – a tribute to the program! We can also attest to the program’s ability to “tame the wild” when it comes to children with discipline issues. The game has a natural tendency to provide structure and self-discipline, along with teaching critical analysis.

I am proud to be part of a program that has made its name known at the local, state, and national levels. We don’t strive to make Grand Masters out of our kids. We simply provide opportunities to experience success, to have fun, and to enrich their lives in a wholesome way.

As to my goals with the local and district programs? I believe in the welfare and self-fulfillment that children need for a quality life. I want to provide my time to help our program run smoothly. We provide our kids, who otherwise may not excel at other extracurricular activities, an avenue for success. We provide out students with an adventure in life! I want to be part of what’s good for kids...
